Anupam Kher has stepped down from the American television show New Amsterdam. The actor was a series regular on the NBC medical drama on which he played the role of Dr Vijay Kapoor since it was launched in 2018.

In the show's universe, Kher’s character resigns from his position as the head of the neurology department after contracting COVID-19 from which he never fully recovers. The news was confirmed by the American website TVLine.com.

Earlier this month, Kher revealed that his wife, actress and member of Parliament Kirron Kher, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. He and his son Sikandar informed everyone that Kirron was “currently undergoing treatment” and “being looked after by a phenomenal set of doctors”.

“She is well on her way to recovery and we thank everyone for their love and support,” he had stated in a social media post.
