Dhanush’s latest Tamil film Karnan, which is loosely based on the 1995 Kodiyankulam caste-based riots, has raked in Rs25 crore on its opening weekend in Tamil Nadu, marking the actor's career-best opening.

It is worth mentioning that cinema halls in the state have been functioning at 50% occupancy since the second day of the film's theatrical run as per new rules issued by the government.

Cinetrak, a box-office portal, tweeted on Monday, “@dhanushkraja's #Karnan does a box office rampage with ₹8.40 crore Sunday in Tamil Nadu and takes the opening weekend gross to ₹25.0 crore. Film takes career highest '3-Day' opening weekend for the actor.”

Dhanush’s film, which has received positive word-of-mouth publicity, is a hard-hitting portrait of the caste divide and police brutality. It sees the actor play as the messiah of a village and its oppressed denizens.

Karnan, which marked the maiden collaboration between Dhanush and Mari Selvaraj, also stars Lal, Natty, Rajisha Vijayan, Yogi Babu and Lakshmipriyaa Chandramouli among others.
