Coronavirus update: Bappi Lahiri tests positive for COVID-19, gets hospitalized

Bappi Lahiri has become the latest Hindi film artiste to have tested positive for COVID-19. The veteran music composer has been admitted in Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital as a precautionary measure on account of his age. He is 68.

The news was shared by his daughter, singer Rema Lahiri Bansal, in a statement which read, “Bappi-da has exercised immense precaution but has been detected with mild COVID symptoms. He has been admitted under the care of Dr Udwadia at Breach Candy hospital purely as a precautionary measure due to his age. He will be fine and home soon. Thank you for keeping him in your prayers always.”

On 17 March, Lahiri had told his fans on Instagram that he had pre-registered for a COVID-19 vaccine and urged people in the long post to go ahead and take the vaccine whenever their turn came. But it’s not clear whether he has taken the first dose of the vaccine which is administered in two doses separated by a few weeks.

Lahiri is one of the most experienced music composers of mainstream Hindi cinema with over 50 years of experience. He was at his peak in the 1980s when he composed music for a long list of films, including Disco Dancer (1982), which is considered one of his best works.

Lahiri has composed music, sung and given the background score in the upcoming film Satya Sai Baba, where bhajan maestro Anup Jalota is playing the titular role.
