Ginny Weds Sunny song 'Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag': Payal Dev's version of Mika Singh's hit is a let-down

This is the second recreation of the song to feature in a film this year. The song is sung by Badshah, Mika Singh and Neha Kakkar.

The makers of Ginny Weds Sunny have recreated Mika Singh's 1990s track 'Saawan Mein Lag Gayee Aag', another version of which also features in the upcoming Indoo Ki Jawani (2020).

The party anthem sees Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey groove to music composer Payal Dev's version of the tune. But unlike dance number in Kiara Advani's film, this iteration fails to leave a mark, and the blame lies squarely on Dev and rapper Badshah.

Dev's composition is lacklustre, with the same beat merely repeating on a loop. The lyrics by Dev and Mohsin Sheikh lack novelty while Badshah's completely unnecessary rap section and cringe-inducing lyrics render the song irredeemable. Take this verse: 'Doodh ubaalo ge toh jhaag lagegi aur jo saawan mein aise naachogi toh aag lagegi (If you boil milk there will be foam and if you dance in the rain you’ll light a fire)'. The song is riddled with such ridiculous lyrics.

This remake song also features Singh, the creator of the original song, and Neha Kakkar. All three singers are seen matching their steps with the film's lead couple. It's sad to see Singh willingly participate in this cringefest. Kakkar is the only saving grace in this otherwise unbearable song.

Gautam and Massey try their best to infuse the music video with some energy but the insipid choreography doesn't give them a chance.

Ginny Weds Sunny is directed by Puneet Khanna and produced by Soundrya Production and Vinod Bachchan. The film is slated to release on Netflix on 9 October.
