The gritty and concise trailer of Shyam Madiraju's Harami reveals why the film has been selected for the upcoming Busan International Film Festival.

If the trailer is any indication, the film is definitely not a light-hearted drama. Set in the city of Mumbai, Madiraju's film tells a Dickensian tale of pickpockets, one of whom develops a conscience only to find out that this has disastrous consequences. It also has a virtually unrecognisable Emraan Hashmi playing an English-speaking Fagin-esque character, Sagar Bhai, who is as ruthless as they come.

Known only by their assigned numbers, the pickpockets bond together under the twisted tutelage of Sagar Bhai. Conflict arises when a pupil pinches a large wad of cash from an unknown railway passenger.

While he is rewarded well by the crimelord, he soon grows to realise that a family somewhere has been affected by his actions. Stricken by guilt, he traces the family only to fall in love with his victim's teenaged daughter.

The trailer promises an exploration of empathy, love and oppression, and the unflinching portrayal of an intricate criminal network that rules the streets of Mumbai.

The film has been selected in the New Currents competition section at the Busan International Festival and will premiere between 21-30 October.
