Actor Vinay Pathak will co-star with Kankana Chakrabarty in her upcoming short film Rerouting. Chakrabarty previously directed Written By? (2019) and Anurup/Mirror Image (2019) featuring herself and veteran actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty. Rerouting will be Pathak’s first Bengali short film.
“The first and the foremost reason for working on this new film by Ms Kankana is her unique vision of storytelling,” said the actor, who has appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Bheja Fry (2007), Khosla Ka Ghosla! (2006) and Gour Hari Dastaan (2015).
“She’s a wonderful writer and actor but most importantly a very able young and talented director. The script of this particular film is very interestingly laid out. It’s wonderful to see how in every film that she writes or directs, she manages to invent an interesting spin on the tale. It’s refreshing and challenging for an actor like me, who’s constantly looking for new things and characters to explore” said Pathak.
In the film, Chakrabarty will be seen playing Kuhu, a lonely woman who works as a driver for a ride-hailing service. On the first night on the job, Avinash (Pathak), a disoriented old man, is her final passenger. As the ride starts, a series of incidents create a claustrophobic atmosphere, revealing the real Avinash.
According to the director, “Rerouting is a story of two polar opposite individuals who happen to cross paths over a night. They end up rerouting each other’s lives. The question that arises at the end is whether that is the right route for them or not?”
Chakrabarty said, “In life, we come across several such individuals. Both parties without their knowledge might end up rerouting each other. But how many times do we really understand this?”
When the director pitched the story outline to her co-writer, Prarthana Joshi, the latter echoed her insights. "Thus we ended up developing the story,” said Chakraborty.
Produced by Chitra Chakraborty, the film will be shot by Mridul Sen.
