Fashion designer Sharbari Dutta found dead in her washroom at 63


Dutta, known for her menswear statements, was not known to be suffering from any ailment. She had been unreachable all of Thursday.

Eminent fashion designer Sharbari Dutta was found dead, possibly of cardiac arrest, last night at her residence in Kolkata. A post-mortem is being conducted today to determine the exact time and cause of death.

Dutta, owner of the fashion outlet Shunyaa, was 63 and was not known to be suffering from any chronic disease. She had not been reachable since Thursday morning and was found in her washroom late at night, the family said.

Known for her statements in menswear, Dutta introduced bright-coloured dhotis and styled many celebrities, including film stars Prosenjit Chatterjee and Jeet and former cricket star Sourav Ganguly. She also worked on several films such as Paromitar Ek Din (2000), Sudhu Tumi (2004), Antarmahal (2005), Saat Pake Bandha (2009) and Iti Mrinalini (2011).

The Bengali film and fashion industry took to social media to mourn the designer's death. Actress Sudipta Chakraborty shared fond memories of Dutta and spoke of her warm and jolly demeanour in a post on Facebook.
