The song Raat Pohale from Debaloy Bhattacharya’s upcoming film Dracula Sir, aptly set in the dark of night, traces the evils in the heart of the anti-hero Amal played by Anirban Bhattacharya as he tries to run, presumably in vain, from the darkness within.
Raat Pohale has been composed by Amit Ishan and performed by Ishan Mitra. The lyrics have been penned by the director himself, poignantly expressing his vision of Amal's inner turmoil. Throughout the song, Mimi Chakraborty as Manjari, a figure from his past, comes across as the only source of light of a man ensnared in a web of insanity.
Amal is a school teacher whose distinct canine teeth earn him the sobriquet ‘Dracula Sir’ and his gradual obsession with the vampire throws him into a frenzy. He ends up scaring people and alienates himself from family and friends.
In one scene, he is seen attempting suicide but eventually choosing to live. However, as the trailer suggests, the time frame of the narrative oscillates between the present and the 1970s and it is difficult to determine whether his obsession drives him to take the drastic step or his depression about failing to adhere to his political ideals.
The entire song features Amal running away from something or revelling in his insanity in solitude. At the beginning of the song, Manjari tells him that he cannot run away for long and the song ends with her saying, “Identify your enemy and finish it.”
As a song, Raat Pohale doesn’t have much auditory appeal, but the visuals, set design and colour scheme pique the interest of viewers.
Dracula Sir is slated for release on 21 October.
