The trailer of Arjunn Dutta’s upcoming film Guldasta seems to tell an empowering story where everyday women bring meaning to each other's life.
Swastika Mukherjee plays the pivotal role of Dolly Bagri, an elderly saleswoman. Rather than merely hawking her wares, she creates intimate bonds with her customers, attempting to bring them a new lease of life.
Also featuring Arpita Pal Chatterjee and Debjani Chattopadhyay, the Guldasta trailer highlights the issue of domestic violence and other problems that plague woman in a patriarchal system.
The glimpses suggest that Chatterjee's character has been subjugated by her husband for so long that she has almost lost her sense of agency as an individual. When Dolly attempts to massage her face with a skincare product of hers, in one instance, she trembles involuntarily.
On the other hand, Debjani is exhausted dealing with her mother-in-law as well as her son, played by Anubhav Kanjilal. While the upbeat Dolly teaches Chatterjee's character to love herself, evident from a scene where she is seen in the midst of a dance routine, she also helps Chattopadhyay's character find herself.
Dolly is seen winning an award for her ambition. However, whether the film only portrays her as a beacon of light to others or a more flesh-and-blood character, remains to be seen. There are also parallel plotlines involving Kanjilal and Anuradha Mukherjee’s characters.
The soothing song in the background, composed by Soumya Rit, hints at a strong female friendship that holds together the characters' households.
Guldasta is slated to be released on 21 October.
