Bittersweet trailer: Anant Mahadevan exposes the disturbing reality of women working in sugarcane fields

The film, starring Akshaya Gurav, is based on real incidents where women working in sugarcane fields were forced to undergo hysterectomies to escape wage loss.

Last year there were shocking news reports about women working in Maharashtra's sugarcane fields who were compelled to surgically remove their uteruses as they had to forgo their wages after abstaining from work due to their menstrual cycle.

The impressive trailer of the Anant Mahadevan's social drama Bittersweet introduces us to one such person, Saguna, played by Akshaya Gurav. It shows the internal struggle of a young woman who fears that she might lose her womanhood after undergoing a hysterectomy and also sheds light on the nexus between the government and the sugar lobby.

It looks like Mahadevan has pulled no punches while showing the dark secrets of one of the richest industries in India. Gurav looks convincing in the role of Saguna. The film also stars Nandita Dhuri and Guru Thakur.

Bittersweet has been selected for the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. The film has been produced by Suchhanda and Shubha Shetty under the banner of Quest Films Pvt Ltd.
