Veteran singer-actor Shakti Thakur dies of heart attack

Veteran singer-actor Shakti Thakur, 78, died of a massive heart attack on 4 October. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mehuli and Monali Thakur, a popular playback singer.

Shakti had sung compositions by Hemanta Mukherjee, RD Burman and Ajay Das in Bengali films such as Damu (1996), Daktar Bou (1986), Bishabriksha (1984), Amrita Kumbher Sandhaney (1982),  and Dadar Kirti (1980). He also appeared in character roles in Bhalobasa Bhalobasa (2008), Kalpurush (1994), Sajani Go Sajani (1991) and Dadar Kirti.

The artiste had been suffering from various age-related ailments for some time. A few years ago, he suffered a massive stroke and was gradually losing his eyesight and hearing abilities.

Originally known as Shaktiprasanna Thakur, the artiste was born in 1947. After moving to India from Bangladesh, he settled in Maslandpur with his family. Initially, he taught chemistry in Netaji Nagar but eventually developed an interest in music and acting. He also performed alongside Utpal Dutt while actively participating in the Gananatya Movement.

Though he appeared on screen several times, he enjoyed being on stage more. He first got his break as a playback singer in Tapan Sinha’s Harmonium (1975). ‘Ogo Sundari’, ‘O Sadher Nodi’, ‘Khokakhuku Chhute Eso’ and ‘Ami Itihas Hote Chai’ are some of his most popular songs. He also performed original Bengali songs frequently on All India Radio.

Thakur’s death has left his daughters devastated. Monali, who has always acknowledged her father as her first music teacher and foremost inspiration, will be reaching Kolkata from Switzerland tomorrow. The last rites of the doyen were performed on Monday morning.
