Kaali Khuhi teaser: Spectre of female infanticide haunts Punjab village

The horror film, Shabana Azmi, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Satyadeep Mishra and Riva Arora, will release on Netflix on 30 October.

The eerie teaser of the upcoming film Kaali Khuhi offers glimpses of death and hints at ghosts that come to haunt the living.

The film tells the story of Shivangi, a 10-year-old girl, who must save her family’s village in Punjab from the restless phantoms of its horrific past. It opens with a shot from the interior of a well into which a baby is being thrown, hinting perhaps at female infanticide, which is sadly prevalent in several states of India, including Punjab. As a group of women cling together at a cremation ceremony, we are shown a shot of the young girl seeing an image of another girl, possibly a ghost in the mirror.

The music conjures up an atmosphere of violence and tension, leaving one unnerved and assembling all the hallmarks of a horror film.

Directed by Terrie Samundra, Kaali Khuhi features Shabana Azmi, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Satyadeep Mishra and Riva Arora. The film has been produced by Anku Pande and Ramon Chibb.

Samundra took to Twitter on Monday to announce the news of the film's release and share the link to its teaser.
