The makers of producer Nikhil Dwivedi's three-film franchise centred on the naagin, a shape-shifting cobra from Indian folklore, have zeroed in on Shraddha Kapoor to play the lead character.
It was recently revealed that the project would be directed by Vishal Furia while they were in search of an A-list actress to play the titular role.
Sharing the reason for selecting Kapoor, the makers said in an official statement, “The makers were scouting for an actress who not only looks great on screen but also [can] perform the role to perfection. Shraddha has established herself as a top commercial Gen-Y heroine and is a massive crowd puller too, making her the ideal choice for the mythological drama.”
Kapoor is excited to have bagged the role. “It’s an absolute delight for me to play a naagin on screen. I have grown up watching, admiring and idolising Sridevi ma’am’s Nagina (1986) and Nigahen (1989) and always wanted to play a similar role rooted in Indian traditional folklore. It’s like playing an iconic character, which has always been so fascinating for the audience,” said the actress in an official statement.
The makers have also shared that the film, whose release date has not been finalized yet, will essentially be a love story.
