Director Raghava Lawrence’s Laxmmi Bomb, which stars Akshay Kumar, is a remake of his Tamil film Muni 2: Kanchana (2011) centred on a man whose body is captured by the soul of a transgender.

The director’s association with the community, however, extends beyond cinema as he also runs a trust that works for the upliftment of various people, including transgenders. “A few transgenders had approached my trust for help. When I heard their story, I felt like I wanted to tell it to everyone through the character Laxmi in this movie [Kanchana]. After watching the film, audiences will know what I am talking about,” he said in an official statement.

The filmmaker is happy that the transgender community could relate to the film. “The movie received huge appreciation from transgenders. They directly came to my home and blessed me,” he said.

The helmer believes Akshay Kumar’s presence in the Hindi remake will help the cause. “So in Hindi when Akshay sir is playing the role, I believe that the message will reach an even wider audience. My special thanks to Akshay sir for accepting and playing this role,” he said.

In March this year, Akshay Kumar donated Rs1.5 crore to Lawrence’s trust for the welfare of transgenders.

Laxmmi Bomb will be released on Disney+ Hotstar on 9 November.
