Coolie No 1 trailer: Varun Dhawan steps into Govinda's shoes as he attempts to evoke the 1990s

Directed by David Dhawan, the film, featuring his son Varun, is a remake of the helmer's own hit Coolie No 1 (1995).

Over-the-top hysterics, punny dialogues, some thumping music and a whole lot of slapstick is all David Dhawan needed to bring back the 1990s vibe. The director's latest trailer for his remodelled Coolie No 1 has all these elements and more.

Featuring Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Johnny Lever, the trailer is nothing if not over the top. It begins with Rawal, a miserly father, declaring that he has the richest son-in-law (Dhawan) in the world. He owns Burj Khalifa, and probably the White House, he declares, not knowing the prince, is in fact, a coolie. This sense of overstatement defines the trailer. The format appears to follow the 1990s story closely. Once Dhawan's faux prince, Raju, has been introduced, Khan makes her entry as a glamorous diva. When he is discovered for the coolie he is, Raju has to find a way to keep the lie going. So he invents a twin and then flirts with Rawal's second daughter, played by Shikha Talsania. What follows is the ridiculous drama of Dhawan managing to keep his lies together.

While Dhawan does not have the easy charm of Govinda in his prime, he is the one actor who comes closest to the legend. The trailer also reintroduces us to the signature Dhawan brand of comedy with bombastic dialogues and double entendres. The trailer also introduces us to the music, with the 'Husn Hai Suhana' being a throwback to the original film, and promises a fairly lively soundtrack. With Rawal, Lever, Jaaved Jaaferi and Rajpal Yadav on board, laughs are a given. The only question is whether the 1990s brand of slapstick will land with a more woke generation.

The film is produced by Pooja Entertainment and is set to be released on Amazon Prime on 25 December.
