Writer-director Ashok’s Telugu film Bhaagamathie (2018) won a fair amount of appreciation and so did its lead star Anushka Shetty. The film has now been remade in Hindi as Durgamati by the same director with Bhumi Pednekar in the lead.
The trailer for the film opens with the character of Ishwar Prasad, played by Arshad Warsi. He is a social worker who has a good following among the masses. His enemies hatch a conspiracy to frame him in a crime. To achieve their end, they decide to make use of former IAS officer Chanchal Chauhan (Pednekar), who is currently serving a jail sentence for murder.
The authorities decide to try and arm-twist Chauhan to implicate Ishwar Prasad in a crime. They decide to do that in Durgamati Haveli, a dilapidated old mansion, as it is a secret hideout. But as soon as Chauhan enters the haveli, she encounters strange happenings and eventually starts behaving like the late Durgamati, after whom the haveli was named.
The trailer suggests that Durgamati is high on technical aspects like camerawork and background score. It might have been ideal to view this film in a movie hall. But it is being released on Amazon Prime Video on 11 December, so you will have to make do with your home theatre system.
Pednekar appears confident as the convict who is more like a victim. But her avatar as Durgamati, particularly in the scene where she screams, is not powerful enough. In fact, it instantly reminds you of Akshay Kumar’s act as Laxmii in the recently released, and widely panned, film of the same name. Coincidentally, Akshay Kumar is one of the producers of Durgamati.
Arshad Warsi looks perfect for the role of the honest and simple Ishwar Prasad.
Durgamati is produced by Cape Of Good Films and T-Series. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch it.
