Cricket is like a religion in India and Hindi cinema has sometimes used the game to address different issues. Films like the Oscar-nominated Lagaan (2001) and Shreyas Talpade's debut Iqbal (2005) come to mind. The Sanjay Dutt-starter Torbaaz is the newest entry in this list.
In the newly released trailer for the film, we see Sanjay Dutt playing an ex-army man who sets up a cricket coaching camp inside a refugee camp in Afghanistan. Dutt's soldier wants to rehabilitate the children in the refugee camps by introducing them to the game. He believes these children are “not terrorists but the first victim of terrorism”.
But the leader of a terrorist outfit, played by Rahul Dev, has different ideas for these innocent children. He considers the children living in refugee camps his recruits and wishes to use them as suicide bombers.
The trailer shows Dutt putting his life at risk for the boys in his cricket team in his attempt to provide them with a normal livelihood and keep them away from terrorism.
We also see Dutt mentioning his tragic past when he lost his wife and son during his stay in Afghanistan. Nargis Fakhri appears as an Afghan woman who is helping Dutt make the lives of these children better.
Torbaaz is directed by Girish Malik who is also one of the producers of the film.
In August, Dutt had announced that he would be taking a break from his work to focus on medical treatment, as he was battling lung cancer. Last month, Dutt said he had emerged victorious in his battle with cancer and thanked fans and well-wishers for their constant support.
Torbaaz is slated to be released on Netflix on 11 December. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
