Ramayan actress Dipika Chikhlia to play Sarojini Naidu in biopic on the freedom fighter

The actress is back in the limelight these days due to the re-telecast of Ramanand Sagar's iconic television serial.

Dipika Chikhlia, known for her role as Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic teleserial Ramayan, is all set to play freedom fighter, activist and poet Sarojini Naidu in an upcoming biopic. The film, titled Sarojini. will be directed by Akash Nayak and Dhiraj Mishra and produced by Kanubhai Patel. 

The news was shared by Chikhlia herself on Instagram, in the form of the film’s first poster. It shows the actress in profile. Her image is in the background, while in the foreground we see a large group of people, who seem to have gathered to protest against the British. Chikhlia has regained popularity in recent times after the government decided to re-telecast the teleserial Ramayan after more than 30 years in March. The show generated impressive ratings.

Born in 1879 in Hyderabad, Sarojini Naidu was an important figure in the India's freedom movement. At the same time, her work as a poet earned her the sobriquet, Nightingale of India. 

After India attained independence in 1947, Naidu was appointed governor of the erstwhile United Provinces, which corresponds to the present-day states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. She remained in office till her death in 1949 due to cardiac arrest.
