Shoojit Sircar brings Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana together as squabbling landlord and tenant in a comical, snarky Gulabo Sitabo trailer. The film is heading for a direct OTT release on Amazon Prime Video on 12 June.
The trailer begins with Khurrana's befuddled young tenant having it out with his ancient landlord (Bachchan), With no heirs, the landlord seeks to milk the tenant for whatever he is worth, while the young tenant plans to take over the mansion once the old man kicks the bucket. As these two scheme back and forth, they are hit by the unexpected. The Archaeological Survey of India led by the ever-present Vijay Raaz decides to take over the mansion.
The title of the film refers to the myth of the two warring sisters who have their hearts set on one man, with each trying to outdo the other. The man, in the trailer at least, seems to be symbolized by the mansion.
The trailer is dominated by the easy presence and charisma of its two lead actors. While Bachchan looks the part as the doddering but determined landlord, Khurrana steps into yet another rooted, local role as the tenant. The language, setting and dialogues add spark to the Shoojit Sircar film.
Written by Sircar's old writing partner Juhi Chaturvedi, the film has all the elements expected of a Sircar film with its humour, relatability, and theme of familial ties.
The film is among the first big star ventures heading for a direct OTT release with Amazon Prime Video. Gulabo Sitabo is set to be released on the digital platform on 12 June.
