At the end of last month, director Shoojit Sircar had said he was okay with his next film Gulabo Sitabo (2020) being released directly online with the theatres shut on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the makers have officially confirmed that the film will be released on OTT (over-the-top) platform Amazon Prime Video on 12 June.

While hinting about the film's digital release, Sircar had told the newspaper Mumbai Mirror on 28 April, "As a filmmaker, I would want to see my film open in theatres, but the situation today is unlike anything anyone had ever experienced. So, I'm open to a digital release if need be, but we will take a decision after 3 May."

Gulabo Sitabo is Amitabh Bachchan's next with Shoojit Sircar after the highly acclaimed Piku (2015), which also starred Deepika Padukone and the late Irrfan Khan. On the other hand, Khurrana had worked with the filmmaker in his debut film, Vicky Donor (2012).

Revealing the plot of the film, an official statement from the makers said, "Shoojit Sircar’s quirky dramedy is the tale of two slimy scheming foxes in a game of one-upmanship, each attracting other members to their clan and each with an agenda of his own."

The first poster of the film is a vibrant image featuring Bachchan and Khurrana's characters against a background that showcases illustrations of a goat, a chandelier, a bird and several flowers, all of which must be tied to the film somehow.
