Coronavirus update: Golden Globes announces new eligibility rule for foreign-language category

The Golden Globes have announced a new temporary rule for the foreign-language category for its 93rd edition next year. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) introduced the move due to the coronavirus pandemic which has forced most theatres across the world to be shut.

According to a report in Variety.com, the foreign language film can now be released in any country in any format in order to be eligible for the award. The new rule states, 'Foreign-language motion pictures that had a bona fide theatrical release planned to begin in their country of origin during the period from 15 March until a date to be determined by HFPA when cinemas in that country have generally reopened, may instead be released in any country in any format (eg, a motion picture format such as in theatres or on pay-per-view or a television format such as subscription streaming service, subscription cable channel, broadcast television, etc) and will still be eligible for the Golden Globe foreign-language motion picture awards.'

Previously, the foreign-language film had to be released in its country of origin during the 15-month eligibility period. The HFPA had already announced similar changes for films slated for release in the US during the same time. Therefore, foreign-language films will not need to be screened for the members theatrically, but the foreign language distributors must arrange for a screening date on the official HFPA calendar and provide them with a screening link or DVD copy to watch at home.

The new rules are in effect from 15 March until a date to be determined by the HFPA once theatres reopen. Actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have already been announced to co-host the 93rd edition; however, no date has been set for the awards ceremony.
