Deepa Mehta's latest, an adaptation of the Sri Lankan best-selling novel, Funny Boy, is now moving into the final stages of production. The filmmaker confirmed that she has completed shooting for the adaptation of the novel by Shyam Selvadurai and will begin editing it soon.
The filmmaker had announced plans of beginning her work on the film back in September 2018. The film is the latest in a line of book adaptations by Mehta. The filmmaker has previously adapted Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children [2013] and Cracking India [1947:Earth, 1999]. Earlier, Mehta had helmed the Netflix original series, Leila, featuring Huma Qureshi, Rahul Khanna, Sanjay Suri, and Siddharth.
Funny Boy, was first published in 1994. Set in the civil war period of Sri Lanka, the film is a coming-of-age story of two 17-year-old boys. In an interview with daily, The Hindu in September 2018, Selvadurai had revealed that Mehta had previously directed a live-radio adaptation of the book for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 2006.
