Hardik Mehta's Kaamyaab (2020) is a sensitive film about the travails of a character artiste in Mumbai's famed film industry. But its soundtrack has the positivity and lightness of a happy story. The latest song composed by Rachita Arora and sung by Ash King, captures the joy of the now-forgotten character actor, when he finally signs on for his landmark 500th film.
The song begins with a funny little anecdote of how character actors across the world of Hindi cinema are still managing on hold on to their turf. The mentions of Anupam Kher's busy social media, Naseeruddin Shah's theatre career, or Paresh Rawal's political interests, are quirky insider jokes that feel relevant. This gives way to Mishra's character signing his 500th film and rediscovering the joy of acting.
Arora's composition is slow, beautiful, and uplifting and is well supported by Neeraj Pandey's lyrics and King's soothing voice. Pandey's lyrics are not exactly set to a rhyme and the stream of consciousness style of singing fits well with the character's thoughts. King does not overdo it and keeps things melodious. Whether it is the song or the visuals of Mishra looking like a genial old man, enjoying his moment under the spotlight, it manages to strike the right note of optimism.
Kaamyaab is directed by Hardik Mehta, and backed by Red Chillies Entertainment and Drishyam Films.
The film is set to release in theatres on 6 March 2020. Watch the song below, and let us know if you would be watching the film.
