Super Deluxe, Hellaro, Gully Boy take top honours at Critics' Choice Film Awards


The winners were announced online via Facebook and YouTube after the awards function was postponed on account of the coronavirus pandemic.

The second edition of the Critics' Choice Film Awards was originally supposed to be held on 14 March, but the ceremony was cancelled in the wake of the growing coronavirus pandemic and announced online instead.

The winners were announced in eight languages and the films Super Deluxe (2019, Tamil), Hellaro (2019, Gujarati) and Gully Boy (2019, Hindi) walked away with multiple honours.

Super Deluxe was deemed Movie of the Year and also won the awards for Best Tamil Film, Best Actor (Male) (Vijay Sethupathi). Best Director in Tamil (Thiagarajan Kumararaja) and also Best Writing (Thiagarajan Kumararaja with Nalan Kumarasamy, Mysskin and Neelan K Sekar).

The National award-winning Hellaro won awards for Best Film in Gujarati, Best Actor (Male) (Jayesh More), Best Director in Gujarati (Abhishek Shah) and Best Writing (Shah with Prateek Gupta and Saumya Joshi).

Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy was named the Best Hindi Film. Zoya was also named Best Director. The film's star Ranveer Singh won the award for Best Actor (Male) for his performance as aspiring rapper Murad.

The truncated ceremony was hosted online, on Facebook and YouTube, by a sporting Arjun Kapoor, and the winners were announced by various critics belonging to the Film Critics Guild. Additionally, Bengali film Mukherjee Dar Bou (2019) was given the Gender Sensitivity award for its portrayal of a relationship of a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Screenwriter Javed Siddiqui, who began as a dialogue writer on Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977), was honoured for his 'Extraordinary Contribution to Cinema'. The award-winning dialogue writer has worked on films like Umrao Jaan (1981), Baazigar (1993), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Pardes (1997) and Fiza (2000).
