Doordarshan starts telecast of popular serials Circus and Byomkesh Bakshi with Ramayan and Mahabharat

The national broadcaster has brought the classics back from its archives for a quarantined nation in lockdown until at least 15 April.

The old teleserial Circus, featuring Shah Rukh Khan before he had made his entry into cinema, and Byomkesh Bakshi, starring Rajit Kapur, are joining the ranks of popular mythological serials Ramayan and Mahabharat as they are broadcast once again on Doordarshan's National channel.

With the entire country in lockdown, the government-owned national broadcaster hopes to give them some comfort television and heaps of nostalgia by bringing back these classic shows once enjoyed by the entire family.

All these shows began airing today, 28 March. Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan will be aired in the morning from 9am to 10am and again in the evening from 9pm to 10pm.

Aziz Mirza's Circus, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Renuka Shahane and Ashutosh Gowariker, is making a comeback on the 8pm slot.

The popular Bengali detective, Byomkesh Bakshi, played by Rajit Kapur returns for the 11am slot. Directed by Basu Chatterjee, it was the first Hindi series to take on Saradindu Bandopadhyay's iconic character.

Finally, BR Chopra's Mahabharat is being aired on Doordarshan Bharati from 12 noon and again at 7pm.
