Actor, producer and All-India Trinamool Congress (AITC) member of Parliament Dev Adhikari has donated Rs1 crore for the safety of the people of his constituency Ghatal amidst the worldwide COVID-19 (novel coronavirus disease) pandemic.

So far, 15 confirmed cases and one death from the disease have been recorded in West Bengal. The announcement of the donation was made from the Facebook page of AITC Ghatal on Thursday 26 March.

The fund will be used to turn the hospitals in Ghatal constituency into quarantine or isolation centres and to procure necessary personal protection equipment for health-care workers.

Adhikari himself has been staying indoors, not just because of the coronavirus lockdown, but also because of a foot injury that he had suffered while shooting for Dhrubo Banerjee’s Golondaaj (2020).

But the actor's publicist said he is making sure to take all the necessary precautionary steps for his parliamentary constituency.

A few days ago, his production house Dev Entertainment Ventures had released an animated video with characters from Hobu Chandra Raja Gobu Chandra Mantri (2020), an upcoming film by Aniket Chattopadhyay, to spread awareness about the coronavirus, stressing upon the importance of physical distancing and personal hygiene.

The two characters, in the likenesses of Kharaj Mukherjee and Saswata Chatterjee, speak in rhyme. While they subtly criticize the Achchhe Din promise of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government, they also point out that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and prime minister Narendra Modi have now joined hands to combat the pandemic.
