Coronavirus update: Sex offender Harvey Weinstein tests positive in jail

The former Hollywood producer, who is serving out his 23-year sentence in the New York state prison, is now in isolation.

Imprisoned Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for the deadly coronavirus. Variety.com quoted a local newspaper, stating that the disgraced movie producer has now been put in isolation in the New York state prison.

The news was later confirmed by BBC.com, which quoted Michael Powers, president of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association.

Weinstein is not the first international celebrity to be hit by the virus. Tom Hanks, wife Rita Wilson, actor Idris Elba, Daniel Dae Kim and Game of Thrones actors, Indira Varma and Kristofer Hivju, have also tested positive for the virus.

According to the Variety.com report, Weinstein is possibly one of two inmates at the Wende Correctional Facility in New York to have tested positive. The report also stated that there has been no confirmation about the matter from Weinstein's legal representatives or the producer himself.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual crimes in March. He had been found guilty by a trial court in New York back in February, after six women testified against him.
