Ever since the lockdown was imposed in March, we have seen the release of many songs in various languages, shot inside the four walls of a house. Almost all of these songs praise the efforts of those fighting in the frontlines in the COVID-19 pandemic. But Mudassar Khan’s soulful rap, ‘Suraj Se Pehle’ pays tribute to the silent warriors in every household, the mothers of India, who never get the appreciation they deserves.

Like Siddhant Chaturvedi’s single ‘Dhoop,’ this song too sees a fine mixture of poetic Hindi lyrics and rap. But Khan’s song is way different though. His lyrics talk about the various sacrifices an Indian mother makes. Emcee Husnain has done justice to the words with good support from Payal Dev.

Khan has shot the entire video on an iPhone inside his house. In the description, he says that he hasn’t used any additional lights. The ploy has worked as this gives the video a realistic feel. Monty Khattar’s music does appear stagnant but it goes well with the genre of the song.

In today’s times, glorifying the role of a woman as a cook and cleaner can be considered problematic. But we also can’t deny that this is still the case in a large majority of Indian households.

Khan is a choreographer, who has worked in some well-known films like Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Dabangg 2 (2012) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) among others.
