The delightful number, written by Dinesh Pant, seems to fit right in the world of Shoojit Sircar’s quirky comedy set in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

In director Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo (2020), the characters of Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana are at war against each other. Bachchan’s Mirza wants to throw out the disrespectful Baankey (Khurrana), and tries to find ways to get him to leave his building.
The latest song, ‘Madari Ka Bandar’ finds him going about in Lucknow on some sort of mysterious quest, where it seems like he wants to sell the grand old building, once and for all. However, Baankey has some tricks and barriers up his sleeve for Mirza. The visuals also give us a glimpse of the other residents of Fatima Mahal, the building owned by Mirza.
Composer Anuj Garg, who also contributes his vocals to the song, has created a wonderful, lilting score for ‘Madari Ka Bandar’, allowing instruments like the banjo and mandolin in between. Singer Tochi Raina and his unique voice takes over the song, giving it his own flair. But it’s Dinesh Pant’s lyrics which are the highlight of the song.
Beginning with the words, ‘banke madari ka bandar, doogdoogi pe naache Sikandar,’ Pant gives us a look into the adversarial relationship shared by the two lead characters. The short song seems to fit right in the world of Sircar’s quirky comedy set in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Written by National award-winner Juhi Chaturvedi, Gulabo Sitabo is set to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on 12 June.
