Hindi cinema has largely struggled when it comes to producing high quality horror or supernatural films. The last name that added life into the genre was Rahi Anil Barve and Anand Gandhi’s Tumbbad (2018). Going by its trailer, Anvita Dutt’s Bulbbul holds more than a hope of being another impressive supernatural movie.
Bulbbul is a period saga based in West Bengal. It is a story about a child bride, Bulbbul, who grows up to be a mysterious woman, played by Tripti Dimri. Bulbbul and her brother-in-law (Avinash Tiwary) have strong feelings for each other. Meanwhile, the town is terrorised by a number of mysterious deaths. Bulbbul has a dark past which she always hides. Is there a link between the gruesome incidents and her past?
Apart from an interesting and mysterious story, one is also impressed by the rich production design and the sharp technical features of the film. These are the points that remind one of Tumbbad, although its story is completely different. The vertical shot in the rain is a noteworthy moment in the trailer.
Dimri and Tiwary received acclaim for their respective performances in Laila Majnu (2018). The two are seen in completely different roles here and they appear impressive. Rahul Bose also makes a mark in an unusual character. The film also stars Paoli Dam and Parambrata Chatterjee.
Bulbbul will start streaming on Netflix from 24 June.
