The teaser of the Hindi web-series Lalbazar gave an indication of its dark and disturbing content but did not reveal the story. The story of the crime show, directed by Sayantan Ghosal, becomes evident in its trailer, which was released today.
The story is set in present day West Bengal and begins with the brutal murder of a sex worker in one of Kolkata's red light areas. The case is handled by a senior cop, played by Sabyasachi Chakraborty, and his subordinate, Kaushik Sen. Their investigation takes a turn when a series of similar murders rock the state. The cops now need to be a step ahead of the killer, who is both smart and dangerous.
Through the series of murders, Lalbazaar throws light on the dark underbelly of West Bengal. The visuals bring back memories of the recent Hindi web-series Pataal Lok, a similar dark crime show. However, Lalbazaar’s story and concept is different.
The colour scheme and the production design suits the dark content perfectly. Both the cinematography and the editing appear sleek, at least from what is seen in the trailer.
Just like the teaser, there is not much focus on any single actor. From whatever we see of Chakraborty, he seems to be in good form, exactly what one would expect from a seasoned campaigner. It will not be be unfair to have expectations from Lalbazaar.
The series will start streaming on Zee5 from 19 June onwards.
