Kalat Nakalat director Kanchan Nayak dies aged 65

Veteran Marathi filmmaker Kanchan Nayak died at his residence in Pune today. He was 65. According to reports, he had not been keeping well since some time. 

Nayak started off as an assistant director in Dr Jabbar Patel’s iconic Sinhasan (1979) and followed it up with films like Bhalu (1980) and Dhakti Soon (1986).  

Nayak made his directorial debut with the very successful Kalat Nakalat (1989), which starred Vikram Gokhale, Ashok Saraf, Nilu Phule, Savita Prabhune, Ashwini Bhave and others. The film went onto win the National award for the Best Marathi film that year. The film also saw Smita Talvalkar make her debut as a film producer. 

Nayak followed it up with films like Raju (2000), Majhi Aai (2008) and Dankyavar Danka (2013). The 2013 film, his last film, was well-known south Indian producer D Rama Naidu's first Marathi film. 

Nayak also tried his hand at Bhojpuri cinema with the movie Pinjrewali Muniya (2007).
