Filmmaker Shashank Khaitan issued a denial about any casting calls for his film Mr Lele, after reports emerged of a casting company issuing notices under his name. Khaitan took to Instagram to warn his followers to stay away from any such calls as "Mr Lele is not happening right now."
The film, launched in February this year, was later pushed to the back burner following date issues. Khaitan issued a statement, which clarified, "I am very sure Varun and I will collaborate soon, either on Mr. Lele itself or on something new, as collaborating with him has been the most joyful and fulfilling experience of my life." This led many to believe that the film had been shelved.
However, with the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, there have been a series of reports of fake casting directors scamming people into sending in money for auditions. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra had to similarly issue a denial earlier in May.
One such case seems to be that of Mr Lele. Khaitan, however, has stepped in and issued a clear denial.
The director said, "I have received many messages and emails from actors that someone going by the name, Nitesh Sharma casting, is claiming to be a casting director for Dharma Productions, and the film Mr Lele. He is asking for money for auditions and other favours. Please note this is false."
The director added, "No one by this name works for Dharma. Also, we are not casting for Mr Lele, as the film is not happening at present."
