Shieladitya Moulik's Eye Candy explores the love and yearning of a blind couple in the lockdown

Shieladitya Moulik’s short film Eye Candy features Prantik Banerjee and Sohini Sarkar as a blind couple. Set against the backdrop of the lockdown, the film explores the love and longing of the couple, while they chat on a video call.

It is interesting that they prefer to chat on a video call, as they are both visually challenged. However, they do not stop from behaving as if they can see everything clearly. For instance, Sarkar points out that he (Banerjee), must be wearing the same black t-shirt. It becomes apparent how well the two know each other, despite not beng able to see each other. 

Sarkar also tries to make her boyfriend jealous by telling him that she was checking out boys from the balcony. To that, Banerjee says that hardly any boys are hanging out on the streets due to the lockdown. 

Through the duration of the entire conversation, Sarkar and Banerjee come across as two innocent souls sharing the plight of loneliness during the lockdown. Once, Sarkar expresses her desperate wish to touch her lover, the only way in which she can feel his existence. However, Banerjee consoles her by making his presence felt with loving words.

The two happy souls never seem to regret their lack of sight, rather they burst into laughter when Sarkar says she has heard a neighbour talking abut her beloved, saying, it’s been long that she has seen him.

Eye Candy would have seemed an entirely boring recording of a couple’s video chat had the couple not been blind. It is their lack of sight that makes this an interesting film to watch.
