The Rajkummar Rao-starrer Omerta (2018) was set to be released on the Zee5 OTT platform last month. The film's digital release was then postponed to 30 July. However, the platform has now decided to hold the digital premiere a few days earlier, on 25 July.

Directed by Hansal Mehta, Omerta is based on the life of Pakistani-origin British terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Shaikh, who was arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Karachi in 2002.

Shaikh was sentenced to death by a lower court but earlier this year the verdict was overturned by the Sindh high court which acquitted him of all charges.

Earlier, Shaikh had been arrested in India for his role in the abduction of four Western tourists in the state of Jammu & Kashmir in 1994 but was released by the government along with Maulana Masood Azhar, founder of the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist organization. and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar in a deal with the terrorists who hijacked Indian Airlines flight IC-814 to Kandahar in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan in 1999.

After being screened at various film festivals around the world, Omerta was released in theatres in India on 4 May 2018. The film did not last long in theatres, probably because of its dark and unconventional theme. But those who missed it then will now get an opportunity to watch it online.

Omerta was the fourth collaboration between Mehta and Rajkummar Rao after Shahid (2013), Citylights (2014) and Aligarh (2016). The duo is now collaborating on Chhalaang (2020) which also stars Nushrat Bharucha. The film was supposed to be released in June but has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
