After Farzand (2018), Fatteshikast (2019) and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020), Marathi audiences will get to see a film on yet another hero of the erstwhile Maratha confederacy. Cinematographer-director Rahul Janardan Jadhav is all set to make a film on Kanhoji Angre, the legendary chief of the Maratha navy.

The makers of the film released its first poster, which shows Angre clad in the Maratha warrior uniform with a raging sea and a few ships in the background. His face is partly hidden by the saffron Maratha standard. The name of the actor who will be playing the naval hero has not yet been revealed.

Jadhav is also making a film on queen Tarabai, another important historical figure from Maharashtra, called Tararani (2020).

Angre is probably the first major naval figure in modern India. He managed to keep hold of a heavily disputed stretch of the western coastline in the early decades of the 18th century.

Angre, who held the position of admiral and naval commander in the Maratha confederacy, is reputed to have never lost a battle at sea. Despite commanding smaller fleets and ships, he managed to outmanoeuvre the British, the Dutch and the Portuguese.

It will be interesting to see how the battles fought at sea are portrayed in the film, considering the budgetary constraints that Marathi filmmakers labour under. The film is being produced by Rahul Bhosle and presented under the Kreative Madaries banner. It is expected to be released in 2022.
