Ram Gopal Varma’s office in Hyderabad, Telangana, was attacked last evening by a group of people, said to be fans of Telugu film star Pawan Kalyan and members of his political party, Jana Sena.

The actor’s fans have been slamming Varma’s upcoming film Powerstar on social media as they believe it is based on Pawan Kalyan’s stillborn political career.

Varma, however, has maintained that his film is not based on any real person. While addressing the media yesterday, he said, “This is a democratic country and I have the right to make a film. I kept insisting this is a fictional movie and not related to anyone, but they are making a mess out of it. No one can stop me from releasing the film on my platform.”

However, the protagonist of Powerstar, as seen in the trailer for the film, resembles Pawan Kalyan while the character's name is heard as Prawan Kalyan. There’s more. The trailer also mentions the real name of the actor as Prawan Kalyan.

Reports said six men were detained by the Hyderabad police after the incident.

Varma also went on to thank the attackers last evening as he believes it has helped his film gain publicity. The filmmaker tweeted, “PK [Pawan Kalyan] fans claiming to be Jana Sena members attacked my office and they have been thrown into the lockup by my guards and cops. I want to kiss and make love to them for giving me more publicity for Powerstar.”

The maverik filmmaker did the same earlier today when the film’s trailer crossed 35 lakh views on YouTube.

Powerstar is slated for release on Saturday 25 July on Varma’s own web platform, RGV World.
