When the patriarch of an illustrious family is murdered, police inspector Jatil Yadav believes it is an inside job, suspecting his new young wife and her lover. But as he wades into the investigation, he discovers the truth is murkier than he was led to believe.
An in-form Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the by-the-book inspector Yadav who is out to do his job, but instead is thwarted by members of the Thakur's family, a politician, and even his bosses in the police department. As he entangles himself with the Thakur's widow, played by Radhika Apte, he is accused of being too close to the case, endangering his position in the force. Will Yadav be able to solve the murder or will he lose his job instead?
Casting director Honey Trehan's directorial debut has a large ensemble cast that also features Tigmanshu Dhulia, Shweta Tripathi, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Nishant Dahiya, Ila Arun, Swanand Kirkire, and Aditya Srivastava. While Siddiqui and Apte's characters circle around one another, it feels the other members of cast also have something to hide.
Echoing the title, the film seems to have been largely shot at night, giving it the tense atmosphere required for a mystery.
Raat Akeli Hai, produced by RSVP Movies, is due to be released on Netflix on July 31. The film will compete against Amazon Prime's Shakuntala Devi, starring Vidya Balan, and Disney+ Hotstar's ensemble comedy Lootcase, featuring Kunal Kemmu and Vijay Raaz.
