Psycho trailer: Eerie visuals coupled with soothing music makes for an unsettling watch

The film helmed by Tamil auteur Mysskin, is reportedly based on the Angulimaal folklore.

Director Mysskin has earned cult status with films like Anjaathey (2008), Nandalala (2010), Onaiyum Aatukuttiyum (2013) and Pisaasu (2014). The director is known for his distinctive style of framing in his films.

The latest trailer for the director's upcoming thriller Psycho has all the tropes one associates with Mysskin. Beautifully framed scenes with clever use of light and shadow are prominent features of all his films and we get to see the same in this trailer as well. In particular, the frame of a silhouetted man standing in front of a petrol pump with a hammer in hand captures our attention. The use of shadows along with natural and artificial light in this frame is a work of art.

The trailer also masterfully uses Beethoven’s popular composition 'Fur Elise', which is later overlayered with the original score by Mysskin himself.

Though we don’t get any idea about the story from the trailer, the film is reportedly based on the famous folklore of Gautam Buddha and the bandit Angulimaal. The trailer features leading cast members Udhayanidhi Stalin, Aditi Rao Hydari and Nithya Menen.

The trailer indicates that Aditi Rao Hydari is being held captive in some dingy room and Udhayanidhi Stalin is a blind man who is running after something. It is unclear whether the two characters have any link with each other, but if there isn't it would be interesting to see how the director merges these two narratives.

Psycho is produced by Arun Mozhi Manickam's banner Double Meaning Production. The film is slated for release on 24 January 2020.
