The teaser of Kaaal gave us a glimpse of the film’s eerie setting. A group of youngsters visit an abandoned villa to shoot a fake horror video, but the real ghost ruins their plan and wreaks havoc.
The trailer for the film builds on the frightful atmosphere created in the first teaser, and admirably so. This is the first of a kind found-footage horror film in Marathi cinema. The first thing that captures our attention in the trailer is the odd angled shots and the use of CCTV cameras. It seems as though the entire film has been shot in this technique. The background score also adds to the horror element in the trailer.
The film features a list of newcomers which include Satish Gejage, Sanket Vishwasrao, Shreyas Behere, Rajkumar Jarange, Vaibhavi Chavan and Gayatri Chighlikar.
Marathi cinema is not exactly known for great films in the horror genre. Barring few good examples like recently released Lapachapi (2017) and Mahesh Kothare’s Pachadlela (2004), the genre remains unexplored.
The found footage genre presents a few challenges in that one can’t use orthodox shooting and editing techniques. This sub-genre, by itself, is not very cinematic; hence, it hasn’t always recieved a great response from the mainstream cinema across the world. One of the notable exceptions is The Blair Witch Project (1999).
The trailer has certainly raised our expectations from the film. Produced by Hemant Ruprell, Ranjit Thakur, Nitin Vaidya & D Sandeep. Kaaal is due to release on 24 January 2020.
