The film, which will see Ranveer Singh and Vicky Kaushal play Aurangzeb and Dara Shukoh while Anil Kapoor plays their father Shah Jahan, is only going to be released next year.

Karan Johar’s upcoming directorial project Takht has been in the news ever since it was announced in 2018. Along with Johar himself returning to the director's chair for a feature film after Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), the film's ensemble cast of stars like Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bhumi Pednekar and Janhvi Kapoor also attracted headline writers.
Now, Takht is all set to go on the floors in March, as per news shared by the makers through a press release. The film's release, however, has finally been shifted officially to 2021. It was earlier slotted for release during Diwali 2020.
Currently, Karan Johar is in Jaisalmer to do a recce for the film's shoot. “Karan, along with cinematographer Mitesh Mirchandani, National award-winning art director Sabu Cyril and his assistant directors will be in the desert city for the next five days to extensively analyse locations and plan the cinematography and set design [of the film],” said the release.
The note added that sets for Takht will also be erected in European countries like Italy and France to resemble the Rajputana of the bygone Mughal era.
“He [Johar] will be exploring locations similar to the landscape of Rajasthan in countries across Europe," the release said. "Massive sets will be erected everywhere—from Jaisalmer to Europe—for which a mammoth budget has been earmarked.”
Takht will tell the story of the two warring sons of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan—Aurangzeb and Dara Shukoh—played, respectively, by Ranveer Singh and Vicky Kaushal. Anil Kapoor will play Shah Jahan.
As per the release, the artistes will be involved in workshops in February before the film goes on the floors for a start-to-finish schedule.
