A young couple’s idyllic existence in Kashmir is shattered on 19 January 1990. Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra brings forward a personal tale of the forced migration of Kashmiri Pandits from the former state. The film introduces newcomers Sadia as Shanti Dhar and Aadil Khan as Shiv Kumar Dhar, the couple at the heart of this story.
Interspersed with footage from real-life news stories, we follow Shanti and Shiv as they leave their home and join others like them in a refugee camp. The trailer shows their struggles over the years as they yearn to return home and attempt to live a normal life away from Kashmir.
Sadia and Khan are shown as aged characters later in the trailer. The film will likely show the couple in present times as well. This is Chopra’s first Hindi film in 12 years; he last directed Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007). His last film as director was the English film, Broken Horses (2015), a remake of his own cult classic Parinda (1989).
Shikara is due to be released in theatres on 7 February. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
