Street Dancer 3D, starring Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor and Prabhu Deva, had a low first week at the domestic box office. Directed by Remo D’Souza, the film made only Rs52.50 crore nett in the period, as per figures shared by BoxOffficeIndia.com.
As per the website, the film should have earned this much in its first weekend itself. It appears that the mostly negative reviews and poor word-of-mouth publicity have affected the film.
The previous dance film by the same director and three artistes, ABCD 2 (2015), had fared much better, making Rs71.87 crore nett in its first week. That film was made on a budget of just Rs65 crore. Street Dancer 3D, according to our trade sources, has been made at a cost of Rs85 crore. This means the film may struggle to get to that mark.
If Street Dancer 3D ends up a flop, it will be Dhawan’s second successive movie to fail after last year's disastrous Kalank.
Last week also saw the release of Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's sports film Panga, starring Kangana Ranaut and Richa Chadha. Panga also proved to be a failure as it could manage a collection of just Rs16.50 crore nett in its first week. Panga was made at an estimated cost of Rs30 crore.
