Thappad trailer: The Taapsee Pannu-starrer is a slap in the face of a regressive society

Director Anubhav Sinha's film deals with the issue of domestic violence.

When Anubhav Sinha made Mulk (2018), it was a transformation for the director. With his next, Article 15 (2019), Sinha proved that the transformation was not a flash in the pan. This belief is now reinforced by the trailer of his next project, Thappad.

The trailer builds up the story of Amu (Taapsee Pannu), who loves her husband (Pavail Gulati). They have a well-settled life until the day the couple hosts a party at their place.

In the midst of a heated argument related to work, Amu feels the wrath of her husband. He slaps her as she tries to stop him from going too far. That slap changes her life.

It is enough for her to sue for divorce. While people around her, including her mother, find it strange that a single slap compelled her to take this step, Amu is adamant that her husband has no right to hit her. Even once, she says.

Amu’s battle is not only against her husband, but a regressive society too. The trailer makes it clear that Sinha has treated the film in the same hard-hitting manner as his previous two films.

Along with the idea that no husband should slap his wife even once, it shows the mindset of a society that normalizes such violence against women in the name of love. In that, the film is a clear slap in the face of patriarchal values in society.

Taapsee appears apt for the role, which gives her plenty of scope to showcase her histrionic skills. Gulati is also impressive in the trailer which features other well-known artistes like Dia Mirza, Tanvi Azmi and Kumud Mishra.

Thappad will be released on 28 February. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
