Filmmaker and photographer Ronny Sen was reportedly attacked with a dagger by Abhijit Dasgupta on Monday, 30 December, for posting his views against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizenship (NRC) on social media. Dasgupta was arrested on Tuesday night, 31 December, from his house, followed by a complaint lodged by the artiste, who has recently earned his name for his debut film Cat Sticks.
Dasgupta had been trolling him for his posts on social media for a while before he asked Sen to meet. “He kept calling me an anti-national and told me that my posts against the NRC, CAA and NPR were rubbish. I asked him why he was trolling me and told him not to call me up again. He kept abusing me and said he would do whatever he pleased to save the country," Sen stated in a statement to The Telegraph newspaper.
Dasgupta then kept on insisting Sen meet him before his housing complex and when the latter did, he unexpectedly lunged with a dagger. Fortunately, Sen could manage to evade the attack and run, as Dasgupta did not follow him.
Dasgupta has been booked under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
In a separate incident, filmmaker and human rights activist Debalina Majumdar was attacked by a group of men, chanting 'Jai Shri Ram', while staging a peaceful protest against the CAA and NRC, a week ago in the Baghajatin area of Kolkata.
The group of men, not only attacked the protesters with sticks and started beating them up, but they also broke Majumdar’s camera. The police soon took charge of the situation and captured one of the attackers, while the rest of them fled.
