Be it a wedding, a club, or a house-party, Punjabi pop classics suit every occassion. The latest song from Jawaani Jaaneman (2020), 'Gallan Kardi' is a throwback to one such number that continues to rule hearts. Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, and Alaya F, dance to this updated version of 'Jine Mera Dil Luteya' from the 1990s. With Jazzy B returning to provide the vocals alongside Jyotica Tangri, the song does have a refreshing beat going for it.
It does feel a little odd to see Saif Ali Khan grooving to such an iconic Punjabi track, owing to his urban image. But the actor seems to thrive on the wacky these days. The choreography does not have anything special, apart from the very colourful vibes that the video emits.
For a change, the song begins with Jyotica Tangri taking the lead as she voices Alaya's character. The composition starts out slowly, reaching its crescendo with Jazzy B's signature 'Oho'. Mumzy Stranger brings in a very Rasta style rap to add texture to the music.
Preet Harpal and Mumzy Stranger's additional lyrics blend well with the original theme. The lyrics, while good, are simply additional frills on an already thumping composition by Prem and Hardeep.
The composition is faster, with more layered beats and rhythms than the original which was a simpler melody that built on the lyrics. This one has a very club feel, fitting with the visuals of the party that the trio of Tabu, Saif Ali Khan, and Alaya are attending. Despite that, it is the hook line 'Oho' of the song that truly kicks up the atmosphere.
All three singers do a good job, with Jyotica Tangri and Jazzy B combining well. Jazzy B has been out of the headlines for a while, but his return might signal the return of 1990s pop, which is all the vogue in recent times.
Jawaani Jaaneman is directed by Nitin Kakkar, and is set to release on 31 January 2020. Watch the song and the original below, and let us know if you are interested in watching the film.
