Gul Makai song 'Gudda Guddi': Taliban threat looms over this quiet composition

The lyrics are quite simple and the singsong pattern has the feel of a children's rhyme. The composition follows the same style.

It would take some doing to script a film more thrilling than the life story of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai. Seeing how her story revolves around an appeal to make education a basic human right, it comes as no surprise that the first song from the upcoming film, Gul Makai, focuses on this theme.

The song, written and composed by director HE Amjad Khan and sung by Azmat Hussain, is a short ode that calls for every child to be educated. 'Gudda Guddi' begins in the backdrop of Mukesh Rishi's Taliban preacher going around enforcing a strict code of conduct. This forces the young Malala to stay at home, away from her books, fearful of the gunshots that ring out frequently in the region.

This fear sets the tone for the song that appeals for a return of a girl's right to education. The lyrics are quite simple and the singsong pattern has the feel of a children's rhyme. The composition follows the same style and does not experiment too much. With just a touch of the traditional, the rhyme scheme becomes fairly likeable.

More than the composition, it is the lyrics that explain the film's theme, with children pleading for their books in return for their dolls and toys.

Gul Makai features Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Mukesh Rishi and Reem Shaikh. The film is set for release in theatres on 31 January. Watch the song below and let us know if you are keen to watch this film.
