Mohit Suri’s crime drama Malang (2020) had an average opening at the box office yesterday, 7 February. Starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani, the film collected Rs6.50 crore nett in India, according to figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.
Also starring Anil Kapoor and Kunal Kemmu, Malang is a crime drama with a hint of romance. The film has received mixed response from critics and the audience alike.
Malang's opening is Roy Kapur’s best till date as a lead actor. His previous best opening was for Aashiqui 2 (2013), also directed by Suri, which had opened with Rs5.11 crore nett. However, that doesn’t make Malang’s opening impressive, because Aashiqui 2 was a low-budget film.
On the other hand, according to our trade sources, Malang has been made at an estimated budget of Rs50 crore. So, obviously, the film needs to see a very good jump in collections today and tomorrow to stand any chance of recovering its investment and making a profit at the box office.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Shikara (2020) was also released yesterday and managed only Rs1 crore nett. Not much is expected from this film because it stars two new faces, Aadil Khan and Sadia, and deals in an understated manner with the serious issue of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. The film has been made at an estimated cost of Rs20 crore.
Meanwhile, Jawaani Jaaneman (2020) dropped further on its second Friday, earning only Rs75 lakh nett. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Alaya F, the film’s total currently stands at a poor Rs19.50 crore nett.
