The soundtrack of Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal (2020) is slowly shaping up to be both original and melodic. The latest song after 'Shayad' and 'Haan Main Galat' is sung by a new pair, Darshan Raval and Antara Mitra.
Ali's regulars, composer Pritam and lyricist Irshad Kamil, reunite for a melancholic song on loneliness. Though the song is almost like a lullaby, the lyrics speak of being lonely in a crowd. Pritam combines Indian and Western instruments like the tabla and the violin to set up the moody track.
The song refers to couple Veer (Kartik Aaryan) and Zoe (Sara Ali Khan) who seem have mutually decided to separate, for reasons yet unknown to us. However, once the decision is made, both carry regrets and pine for each other.
The song also gives a brief glimpse of actor Randeep Hooda, who seems to be working with Khan.
Singer Darshan Raval almost whispers the number at times, but lifts his vocals as the song moves its tempo forward. Antara Mitra joins in the second half and it's nice to hear a female voice finally on the soundtrack. Both 'Shayad' and 'Haan Main Galat' were largely male perspectives.
The visuals of the song features the familiar scenes from previous Imtiaz Ali films — the trip to the mountains, mingling with locals at tourist locales, and, of course, the lead couple in a dilemma over their relationship.
Love Aaj Kal is due to be released on 14 February. Watch the song below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
