Let us start by simply saying that Ankur Tewari is underrated as a composer. The composer-singer's latest song features on the soundtrack of Ruchi Narain's Guilty. Featuring Tewari's voice, the song speaks to the emotion of love that blossoms between Kiara Advani's Nanki and Gurfateh Singh Pirzada's VJ in the film.
The song, in the film, is written by Nanki, and marks the beginning of the chemistry between her and the band's lead singer, VJ. While it starts off in Nanki's voice, slowly VJ takes over as he charms his way into her heart. The visuals capture the friendship, camaraderie, and the slow burning romance between the two band members.
Composed and sung by Tewari, the song is a soothing composition that is reminiscent of the first slow flourishes of love. Using a minimalistic approach, the song has Tewari's voice as the main dish. The instrumentation, while not minimal, is subdued to keep Kausar Munir's wonderful lyrics front and centre. The composition has the feel of a true band composition, with the guitar and the keyboard playing a major role. The only percussion is the slow-paced rhythm of the drum that picks up at the right moment.
Guilty will feature Akansha Ranjan Kapoor, Taher Shabbir, and Niki Walia alongside Advani and Pirzada. The Netflix original film is set to stream on the platform from 6 March.
